On Sunday 20th September, enthusiastic members of Highbury Tennis Club ventured south of the river to the beautiful Wimbledon Club in support of Maggie’s - a wonderful charity that helps people and families navigate the challenges of cancer by providing free expert support, information and a welcoming place to turn to when it's needed most.
The clubhouse (especially its sunny terrace) was the perfect place to wind down after the frenetic tennis action. But it didn’t stop there - more excitement for the raffle, with generously donated prizes including Monica Vinader necklaces, a Cowshed pamper pack and a personal training session, kept spirits high. And several of us walked away with second-hand books also being sold in aid of Maggie’s. We all enjoyed a delicious lunch while taking stock of a fabulous day which raised over £5,000 for a very worthy cause.
So who won the tournament? Our very own Tam put in a spectacular display of tennis, placing second overall. And the winner was Nicola B of Putney tennis club (friend of HTC member Catherine B).
A very special mention to Suzanne Kingston (5th team) and her friend Monica - both Board members of Maggie’s London branch - who pulled together the whole day. It couldn’t have been more perfect in the glorious autumn sun.
Thank you to everyone - players and spectators alike - who made the day such a huge success with their generosity. And a very special mention for Suzanne - we love you and wish you well for your own recovery journey.
Now onto planning next year’s event………!
