We are delighted to report that thanks to Councillor, Caroline Russell, and coverage by the Islington Gazette, Islington Council has decided to install two Portaloos at Highbury Fields. Thank you to the Council for resolving this crisis and the club would like to thank Caroline Russell for all her support.
BACKGROUND TO THE ISSUE
Highbury Tennis Club members had become increasingly frustrated by the lack of toilets at Highbury Fields. The official “Superloo” (20p coin-in-the-slot) was almost always broken and, once fixed, tended to break down again within hours. It was also felt that one
toilet alone was not enough to provide for 11 tennis courts, several football pitches, netball courts, a closed-off children’s area and a vast field where local people picnic and barbecue on summer evenings. Club members were also deeply embarrassed to host home matches with no toilet and nowhere private for visiting teams to change into sports clothing.
Local Islington Councillor, Caroline Russell, took up the cudgels on behalf of Highbury Fields users and on 14th July 2015 she came along to see the problem for herself accompanied by a photographer from the Islington Gazette which also championed the cause.
