Message to Club Members
The picture says it all – our wonderful Club Coach Wendy has decided to retire. I know that the whole club membership will join me in wishing her a very happy retirement but it is an understatement to say that she will be sorely missed. The club would not exist without Wendy. In 2010 she conceived of the idea for Highbury Tennis Club creating an unstuffy competitive tennis environment using Highbury Fields’s public facilities. She started with just two women’s teams and I doubt that she guessed that twelve years later we would have five women’s teams, three men’s and two mixed senior squads competing in Middlesex divisions. She modestly claims that she could not have done it without the support of many volunteers within the club but the truth is that Wendy’s determination - or should that say steely bloody mindedness?! - has proved to be wonderfully unstoppable. She has coached and encouraged beginners, returners and top players alike and inspired many to lift their game. |
Wendy is not abandoning the sport she loves. She will continue to captain the Middlesex County Over 60s and Coolhurst’s Women’s II teams. She promises that she will not step back completely from the club so look out for her on match nights poorly camouflaged in Gary’s high viz jacket while casting a critical eye over our endeavours and she will continue to play a role on the committee.
So what will Wendy do with her new spare time? She plans to spend weekdays in her ceramics studio at home exploring her creativity (for those who don’t know, she was a professional ceramicist for many years) and she will be on hand for coffees, lunches, cocktails and suppers. As a new grandmother with a loving family around her, she will be kept busy.
An era has ended - Wendy's name has been synonymous with tennis at Highbury Fields for a long time.
With many many thanks to an exceptional coach and all-round inspiring person.
